Megan Fox has revealed that she once traveled to Costa Rica with her boyfriend, Machine Gun Kelly, so that they could drink ayahuasca in a "proper setting."
The actress, 35, said that when she and her musician beau, 31, imbibed the psychoactive tea—which is used as a ceremonial medicine and can cause hallucinations—she went to "hell for an eternity."
Recounting the experience during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! she told guest host Arsenio Hall, per Entertainment Tonight: "So we went to Costa Rica to do ayahuasca in, like, a proper setting, with indigenous people."
"So I was thinking it was like glamping, like it was gonna be some kind of five-star experience," she continued. "But you get there and you really are in the middle of the jungle, and you don't get to eat after like 1 p.m.
"You have to walk a very far distance to get your water, and you can't shower because they're in a drought. There was nothing glamorous about it, and it's all a part of making you vulnerable, so you sort of surrender to the experience."
According to Fox, things got decidedly less glamorous for the couple, when they and "20 other strangers" lined up to induce vomiting.
The Transformers star said: "You all line up at the edge of the rainforest, over this weird fence, and you go three by three and you drink lemongrass tea until you, not by your own volition, just vomit everything out of your body. And you have to vomit a certain amount until they let you get back with everyone else, so you're like cheering on everyone as they throw up."
Despite the couple's initial hesitance in participating in that part of the events, Fox told Hall that it turned out to be "such a good bonding experience," as it helped to get them "ready to go into the ceremony that night," free of any vanity.
As for the ceremony itself, Fox said that it lasted three nights and was "incredibly intense."
"Everybody's journey is different, but on the second night I went to Hell for eternity," she said. "Just knowing it's eternity is torture in itself, because there's no beginning, middle or end. So you have a real ego death."
"[Aayahuasca] surpasses talk therapy or hypnotherapy... because it just goes straight into your soul, and it takes you to the psychological prison that you hold yourself in," she added. "So it's your own version of hell, and I was definitely there."
Elsewhere during her appearance on the show, Fox addressed the couple's penchant for stepping out together in matching ensembles.
"That's something I started with him just because he's such a flamboyant dresser that I can't really pull off, just like, the sweatpants and the yoga gear anymore," she said, according to People. "I have to, like, elevate myself to his level... cause he's always covered in, like, grommets, zippers, sequins, everything's pink, everything's glowing."
"He's like always coming off of a stage, so I have to kind of match what he's doing," the actress added. "So we do coordinate often."
